Literature Text

A single star shines so bright.
Over the glow of phosphorescent bay
Yo soy Boricua by night.

Framed by lines of red and white
A triangle of blue like ocean spray.
A single star shines so bright.

The coqui sing out their delight
Until the dawn, their songs they play
Yo soy Boricua by night.

The ghost of Taino walk the night
Dancing the areito, a lively display
A single star shines so bright.

Cemis created as if to invite
Gods into little figures of clay.
Yo soy Boricua by night.

To know my people brings me delight
I will soon return, I hope, I pray.
A single star shines so bright.
Yo soy Boricua by night.
This poem was done for my Creative Writing Class. Inspired by a song by Roy Brown called "Boricua en la Luna" (I think that it's name) this poem reflects on what I remeber and love about Puerto Rico.

Okay here are a few translations for those who don't know spanish, specifically Puerto Rican terms.
Yo soy=I am
Boricua= What true Puerto Ricans call themselves, since the island's original name was Borinquien (sorry if I mispelt it. my spelling is horrible)
Coqui= a small tree frong indigenous to the island. They sing their name and are a symbol for the island.
Taino= Native indians of the island
Areito= A sort of dance the Taino did, a celebration
Cemis = little statues of the Taino's Gods

Oh and just a side note, the second stanza describes the Puerto Rican flag.
